they come with a caution, keep away from kids.
Cough syrups in overdose can make breathing difficult.
So never ever decide cough syrup on your own.... type and dose matters a lot.

You may see hundreds of cough syrups on shelf in a store.
Few to name are
benadryl
codeine corex
pholcodeine
CPM
Phenergan
dextrometherfans
these may be in syrups, tablets lozenges
and there are combinations of these... but all these may put you to sleep, sometimes dangerous too, so always consult a Dr before you buy.

Also there are ayurvedic cough syrups
adulsa
tulsi
mint pudina
etc
and trial and error without consulting a doctor may make you get confused and frustrated and at a risk.

Also there are cough syrups that make worsen the cough, to remove sputum out.. they are called expectorents, often they contain guaiphensin,bronhexine,ambroxol... etc

And some cough syrups help breathing by keeping airways wide and causing at times fast heart rate... these are bronchodilators.. like salbutamol, asthalin, levosalbutamol, terbutalin, theophylline.

So its very tricky for your doctor to choose a proper cough syrup depending on what you and your child suffering from...

Leave it to the doctor and let doctor decide the best.

so how does a doctor decide it? JUST FOR INFORMATION ONLY
dr will examine and assess whether the patient needs:
1.bronchodilation/airway widening
2.expectorant
3.sedation
4.a combination of above
and will decide the type and dose depending on form , pattern, severity, and associated symptoms.
Therapy will fail if assessment fails; so doctor may think of changing cough syrup once you complain of not working.

By the time the patient feels breathless, its severe narrowing of airways.

Cough is an early symptoms but all coughers are not asthmatics.

how to suspect airway narrowing or obstruction sitting at home:

1. if the cough is more early in morning... late in night... yes its likely the patient may get benefited by bronchodilators.
2.if the rapid number counting makes you take a breath before 20, you need an evaluation for airway narrowing.
3. if the cough is with vomits, more often it is airway narrowing related vomiting and not from gut.
4. And if you measure a peak flow with breathometer; and if it is less by 20 percent of your highest best reading yet... likely that you need medicines to correct airway narrowing.
5.if you need to take rescue medicine more than 2 times a day, its likely that this episode is an exacerbation of asthma or hyperreactive airway disease.
7. All this may not be asthma if it doesnt cause even minimal relief with bronchodilators.

लहान मुलांनाच काय मोठ्यानाही सर्दी खोकला नेहमी होऊ शकतो . नेहमी नेहमी सर्दी खोकला होण्याची दोन कारणे असतात ..
१. इन फ़ेक्शन् किवा जन्तुचा प्रदुर्भाव
२ एलर्जि वा दमसद्रुश्य आजार

फ़्लु चे व फ़्लु सारखे अनेक विशानु हवेत पसर्लेले असतात. हे विषाणु सहसा नाकावाटे शरीरात प्रवेश करतात
सर्दी खोकला झालेल्या व्यक्ती च्या संसर्गामुळे अशा प्रकारचे आजार पसरतात. अशा आजारामध्ये सुरवातीस थोडासा ताप व नाक वाहून नंतर खोकला वाढतो व १० दिवस खोकला राहू शकतो. शरीर प्रकृती किवा जेवण कमी असेल तर जंतू जम धरतात व निमोनिया होऊ शकतो.
मुलांची श्वास नळी बारीक असल्याने थोड्याशा सर्दीने मुले कासावीस होतात दम लागून दुध पिणे कमी होते अन डॉक्टर कडे जायला लागते.. अशा परिस्थितीत डॉक्टर नाक व श्वास उघडणारी औषधे देतात. जर हा आजार जीवाणू मुळे असल्याचे डॉक्टर ला वाटले तर प्रतीजैविक antibiotic सुद्धा द्याया लागतात. श्वास घ्याला त्रास असेल तर ओक्षिजन किवा जेवण कमी असेल तर सलाईन पण लागू शकते.
लहान पनि झालेल्या बऱ्याच इन्फेक्शन ना शरीर प्रती कारक बनते अन त्यामुळे सहसा अशी इन्फेक्शन मोठ्यांमध्ये दिसत नाहीत. पण मोठ्यामध्ये होणारे सर्दी खोकल्याचे आजार मुलानंना पण होउ शकतात... अन ते पण सिरिअस प्रकारात. म्हणून सर्दी पडसे झालेले असताना मोठ्यांनी लहानाजवळ जाणे टाळावे .. हात धुतल्या शिवाय त्यांच्याजवळ जावू नये.
साधारणता वयाच्या पहिल्या वर्षात मुलाना ६ ते ८ वेळा सर्दी होऊ शकते.दुसऱ्या वर्षात ४ ते ६ वेळा, अन नंतर दर वर्षी ३-४ वेळा सर्दी होऊ शकते.
सहसा इन्फेक्शन चा सर्दी खोकला ३-७ दिवसात ठीक होतो.कधी निमोनिया असल तर वेळ लागू शकतो.
जर सर्दी जास्त दिवस रहात असेल तर अडेनैड व खोकला जास्त दिवस राहिला तर तोंसील ची सूज पण असू शकते.
जास्त दिवसाच्या आजाराने जेवण कमी होवून वजन कमी होऊ शकते.
निमोनिया व फ्लू ची लस काही प्रमाणात मुलांना या आजारापासून संरक्षण देवू शकते.

ज्या मुलांना नेहमी बिना तापाची सर्दी व खोकला असतो त्यांना इन्फ़ेक्शनच असायला पाहिजे असे नाही.
प्रदूषण व सामाजिक व वातावरणातील बदलामुळे एलर्जी किवा अतिसंवेदनशीलता चे प्रमाण आजकाल वाढताना आढळते
... यात माहिती असलेल्या वा नसलेल्या गोष्ठी वा वस्तूंची एलर्जी किवा तत्सम संवेदने मुले शरीरात वेगवेगळी रसायने बनतात ज्यामुळे नाक वाहने, शिंका, छाती भरून येणे वा घसा टोचणे, किवा फक्त खोकला किवा दम लागणे इत्यादी लक्षणे वारंवार दिसून येतात. अशी लक्षणे जर रात्री जास्त आढळत असतील तर् एलर्जी वा दम सदृश्य आजार असण्याची शक्यता दाट असते .

नाक घसा व छाती ची हि लक्षणे जर वेळीच ओळखली नाही तर शरीर वाढी व विकासावर परिणाम होतो .
साधारणता अश्या आजारात नेहमी औषधे लागतात, कंटाळा करून चालत नाही. प्यायची औषधे रक्तात मिसळतात म्हणून सहसा डॉक्टर नोकाने किवा श्वासाने घेत येतील अशी औषधे देतात ज्यांचा १ ते दोन महिन्याचा कोर्स पण असू शकतो.
अशा आजारात जर लक्षणाची नोंदवही ठेवली नाही तर कोर्स किवा डोस कमी करणे अवघड जाते. श्वासाने दिली जाणारी औषधे सहसा नाकाचा स्प्रे किवा इन्हेलर व स्पेसर पद्धतीने दिली जातात. इन्हेलर प्रकारात श्व्वास उघडणारी व श्वसन नळी ची सूज कमी करणारी औषधे खूप कमी डोस मध्ये दिली जातात. नोंदवही चे रेकॉर्ड पाहून डॉक्टर डोस कमीजास्त करतात.

हि दोन्ही कारणे फार कॉमन आहेत. एलर्जी अस्थमा एलार्जीक rhinitis कधी कधी अनुवांशिक असतो. कधी कधी इतर एलर्जी हि सोबत असू शकतात, सर्वांचा एकत्रित इलाज करावा लागतो.
